The sunscreen industry is possibly the worst offenders when it comes to creating toxic products. It makes my blood boil just thinking about how many times as a kid I had this toxic mixture of chemicals baking into my skin. NOT OKAY.
This highlights just how toxic they can be, “In 2021 the European Commission published final opinions on the safety of three non-mineral ultraviolet, or UV, filters, oxybenzone, homosalate and octocrylene. It found that two of these filters – homosalate and octocrylene – are not safe in the amounts at which they’re currently used. As a result, the commission proposed limiting the allowed concentrations of these filters in sunscreens.” Each one of these main ingredients have been known carcinogens that can absorb into the skin and cause skin irritation, endocrine disruptions and free radical damage.
These studies don’t even address all the other chemicals in sunscreen that are potentially
toxic, ESPECIALLY when they’re baking in the sun. I pulled a list of ingredients in one of the most popular sunscreen brands and this is what I found:
Avobenzone 3.00%, Homosalate 10.00%, Octisalate 5.00%, Octocrylene 10.00%, Water, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Hydrated Silica, VP/Hexadecene Copolymer, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Dimethicone, Polyester-8, Caprylyl Methicone, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Trideceth-6, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Fragrance, Sodium Polyacrylate, Behenyl Alcohol, Dimethyl Capramide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Xanthan Gum, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide, Tocopheryl Acetate, BHT, Disodium EDTA, Methylisothiazolinone
It is LOADED to the brim with chemicals and Fragrances.
I’m sorry but never again willI I support one of those crappy brands.
Just take a minute and think about if these chemical sunscreens are banned
because they’re kill reefs...just think about what they’re doing to your precious skin!
Zinc oxide is always the better way to go when it comes to sunscreen, however one thing to note is that you don’t want it in an aerosol form (sorry, I know it’s more convenient but it can be potentially harmful when inhaled). Also when buying zinc oxide formulas,
you must be sure that any zinc oxide product you purchase is made with NON- nano particles because non nano particles
are not able to penetrate the skin.
Remember the sun is not your enemy, you need a few minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen on in order to produce Vitamin D! Which is a crucial vitamin for keeping our hormones and immune system in optimal health.
Moderation is key with sun exposure and be cautious not to burn.
Okay, enough with the rant, here are some better sunscreen solutions!
This one I have been using for years for sun protection. It does go on a little white unfortunately (like most non nano zinc oxide sunscreens) I’ve found in order to not look like a ghost once you put it on you must make sure its warm, and you must squeeze it into your hands, rub it together for a while first and then lather it on to your skin. I admit, it is a pain and it can be thick straight out of the bottle but it is cost effective and has great ingredients- 90% organic as well!
Active Sunscreen Ingredient:

Okay, talk about the best sunscreen EVER created. I love products with beef tallow just how well it moisturizes the skin but also there are only 6 other ingredients in it other than the beef tallow. It uses Non-Nano Zinc Oxide for the sun protection which acts as a barrier for UV light. Then the other ingredients come together and create this light and silky easily spreadable sunscreen. It is a little pricy in my opinion but worth every penny.
Ingredients: Organic 100% Grass Fed Tallow, jojoba, sustainable Beeswax, propolis, cold-Pressed Olive Oil, and shea Butter
